Ministry of Mines & Energy Liberia
BOMI COUNTY – JULY 14, 2025: The Ministry of Mines and Energy, through its Department of Operations, has carried out a technical assessment of designs and layout of a proposed port facility the Bao Chico mining company is intending to construct along the Atlantic Ocean in Bomi County for export of iron ore from its operation sites.
The six-member technical team headed by the Deputy Minister for Operations, William Hines, including Deputy Minister for Planning, Research and Development, Fahnseth Mulbah, held discussions with Bao Chico General Manager John Jallah and other senior executives. During the day-long working visit, the Mines and Energy Ministry delegation reviewed maps and technical drawings of the proposed docking infrastructure and provided guidance on best practices to ensure the facility, when constructed, meets all safety standards, avoiding environmental degradation and economic loss.
Following the roundtable engagements, Deputy Minister Hines and team then proceeded to the tributaries of the Atlantic Ocean, and the Po River where a field assessment was done. The Ministry [Mines and Energy] provided technical insights to the Bao Chico Executives on procedures and methods of implementing their docking facility project, so as to make amends for the previous one the company constructed along the Po River which is facing technical difficulties and not serving the purpose of transporting the ore to the Freeport of Monrovia.
In exercising its mandate to provide proper supervision and regulation of Liberia’s mining sector, Deputy Minister Hines assured that the Ministry will remain engaged with Bao Chico every step along the way in proffering best practice advice regarding the company’s investment in Liberia, making sure the port facility project is environmentally sustainable, and mutually beneficial to boost the economy through jobs provision and revenue generation to support government’s national development programs.
The visit to Bao Chico Mining Company marks a continuation of the Ministry of Mines and Energy’s continued reform engagement with concessionaires and stakeholders in the mineral sector. It underscores the Ministry’s resolve to enhance institutional presence, promote transparency, and ensure that extractive activities align with Liberia’s development priorities.
A formal assessment report is expected to be compiled and submitted to the senior leadership of the Ministry in the coming days for further determination. Mining Engineer, Samuel Wilson, and Geologist, Levi Sendolo from the Department of Operations were also part of Deputy Minister Hines’ delegation that conducted the technical assessment at Bao Chico on the weekend of July 7, 2025.
