MINISTRY OF MINES AND ENERGY/MONROVIA: The Ambassador of Sweden near Monrovia, H.E. Karl Backeus, and a parliamentarian of that European Nation from the Centre Party, Rihard Nordin, have paid a courtesy visit to the Ministry of Mines and Energy and held fruitful bilateral talks with the minister, Wilmot Paye.
Ambassador Backeus, and Parliamentarian Nordin were at the Mine and Energy Ministry. to further pronounce their government's partnership collaboration with Liberia. The specific purpose of the visit was centered around getting information and understanding about Liberia's energy solutions, specifically electricity.
In order to engage with the Swedish delegation in achieving the objectives of the visit, the Liberia Electricity Corporation (LEC) formed part of the discussions through Deputy Managing Directors for Operations, Thomas Gonkerwon, and Mohammed Sow, respectively, while Deputy Minister for Energy, Charles Umehai joined Minister Paye as a member of the senior management.
The two Swedish envoys exchanged friendly notes with Minister Paye and his team, and assured that the outcomes of the meeting have bright psospects of Liberia benefitting Sweden's support to efforts by the Government of Liberia to upscale access to sustainable and reliable electricity to drive economic growth and national development programs.
LEC's two officials attending the meeting updated the Swedish Ambassador, and Parliamentarian Nordin, about the current state of affairs in power generation, transmission and distribution achieved so far, and spoke about ongoing national efforts to transition Liberia to the SCADA technology by the end of 2026, which will enable the Country remotely monitor transmission networks to curtail power-theft which is a menace to commercial capacity of LEC in contributing to revenue generation.
Minister Wilmot Paye commended Ambassador Backeius, and Parliamentarian Nordin for the visit, expressing the Liberian people's gratitude to their government for development assistance they have been providing since the inception of their diplomatic mission here [Monrovia]. According to the Mines and Energy Minister, Liberia warmly welcomes Sweden's interest in making a contribution to the Government's investment in electricity in order to make service delivery effective and reliable not only to existing consumers, but concession companies, whom the Minister said have also expressed a desire to transition to the national power grids, which carry lesser operational budgetary costs.
